The address handwritten on cover reads "Miss Polly Williams, Troy" and a notation about carrier is in the bottom left. The folded letter was written in Shaftsbury, Vermont, on January 17, 1790, by Nathan Williams to his sister Polly in New York. From January 15, 1777, to March 4, 1791, the State of Vermont was independent and is sometimes referred to at the Vermon Republic.
