Envelope is postmarked by Charlottesville, Virginia, May 14, 1861, on an envelope addressed to William Cabell Rives, a member of the Provisional Confederate Congress meeting in Montgomery. Rives had previously served in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives and as Ambassador to France.
