December 1, 1857, folded letter from Havana, Cuba, to Boston carried by American mail steamship "Daniel Webster," operating for Cornelius Vanderbilt from Havana (December 8) to New York (December 13). At New York the letter was marked for 10-cents postage due, the rate for an incoming steamship letter originating along the steamship route less than 2,500 miles away.
