September 28, 1828, Lisbon, Portugal, to London, outer sheet of folded letter without contents. Docketing provides date letter sent and date it arrived at London destination. Letter posted in British post office at Lisbon, where straightline handstamp in black applied in upper right corner. It was carried by the Falmouth sailing packet “Duke of Kent,” departing Lisbon on September 29 and arriving at Falmouth on October 7, 1828. Letter reached London on October 9, as shown by black circular datestamp on reverse. It was marked at Falmouth for 2s6d postage due. This consisted of 1s7d packet letter rate from Lisbon to Falmouth plus 1s United Kingdom inland fee from Falmouth to London abated by 1-penny as required by post office instructions for packet mail via Falmouth.
