Star Route registry padlock
Eagle Lock Company · Date on Shackle: 1873
Brass lock developed by the Eagle Lock Co. The shackle front was stamped "U. S. Mail" and the case front "EAGLE LOCK CO. TERRYVILLE, CONN. PAT'D. 1856 & 1870" by the manufacturer. The Post Office Department adopted this lock in 1870 for through and registered mail on Star Routes.
