This is a Postmaster appointment certificate that bears a red seal of the “Confederate States of America Post Office Department” and is signed by Postmaster General John H. Reagan. The document records the appointment on August 9, 1861 of Adam C. Bear (June 25, 1830 – September 27, 1906) as postmaster of Bon Air, Rockingham County, Virginia upon his bond and oath of office on August 20, 1861. The document also has the location of the Post Office Department in Montgomery, Alabama crossed-out and “Richmond, Virginia” has been written in its place.
