Sergeant Jack Fogarty typed this three-page letter from “Tsuchiura, Japan,” on October 27, 1945 for his pen pal Mary. He begins by acknowledging that Mary has already received the news that her husband John is returning from deployment in the Pacific: “Fine thing! Here we go and do everything to keep the news from leaking out that Jack [John MacDonald] . . . was on his way home and then you find out anyway. Anyway, no matter how you found it out, it still was a wonderful surprise, wasn’t it?” Fogarty further emphasized this joyous occasion by painting the envelope (Museum ID 2012.2006.30.1) with an illustration of Mary and John’s reunion.
