Hand-illustrated cover

Corporal Jack Fogarty sent this American Red Cross airmail envelope from APO 926 (Morotai, Moluccas, Netherlands East Indies) to his pen pal Mary MacDonald in New York. It was postmarked October 8, 194[4] (date based on the associated letter). It was passed by censor (#31527) and franked "Air Mail, Combat Zone, No Postage Available, J A MacDonald Jr." by Fogarty’s friend and Mary’s husband, Chief Warrant Officer John A. MacDonald. The illustrated envelope enclosed a three-page letter (Museum ID 2012.2006.34.2.1-3) that described the new South Pacific location for Fogarty’s unit. The black and gray watercolor and ink sketch in the center of the cover is a self-portrait of Fogarty with a cup of tea, something he recalled enjoying even in the jungle.
