This envelope is from one of the Hincks brothers to his sister Lida. The October 1, 1864, letter was marked 'Examined' at Hilton Head by Capt. Neville Soulé, GS Gen. and Staff, Adj. Gen. Dept. of Charleston. It was then put aboard a U.S. naval ship bound for New York, where upon it entered the U.S. mail. The 1861 3-cent stamp carried it to occupied New Orleans.
