Transatlantic Cover to Boston

April 25, 1867, Paris to Boston, envelope without letter contents sent under the US-French convention of 1857, and paid 3 x 80 centimes = 240 centimes for a triple rate letter of 15-22.5 grams weight. Letter posted on April 26 in the Paris district office at Rue du Cherche-Midi. Letter paid with horizontal pair and a single 80 centimes rose on pinkish paper 1862 adhesives, each canceled with a 6-pointed star of dots with the numeral “10” assigned to that office. A Paris exchange office clerk credited three 3 cents = 9 cents to the US with a red handstamp “9” and marked the letter paid with a small boxed PD. Since the letter was to cross the Atlantic on a British steamship for which the French had to pay the transit expense, the US was entitled only to 3 cents and the French to 12 cents for each rate. Letter carried by Cunard steamship “China” from Queenstown (April 28) to Boston (May 8), where a Boston clerk also marked that the letter had arrived by British packet and was fully paid.
