Owney received this trade check token from Frank Theis’s saloon. The token offers 5-cents off “at the bar” to the recipient. There is no additional information to indicate where Theis’ saloon was located, or when he gave the token to Owney. Trade checks such as this were used much like coupons are today, offered by merchants as a lure to increase customers’ purchases.
