Civil War Union patriotic cover

This Civil War Union patriotic stationery has a red and blue printed seal of the United States that dominates the left half of the envelope and is surrounded by abbreviations for thirty-four states. It is addressed, “Rachel J Walters / [strikethrough “Roilcenter PO / Cass Co / Ind”] / Star City / Ind.” The three-cent George Washington stamp, which was placed on its side in the lower left corner has a bullseye cancel mark and is postmarked, “INDIANAPOLIS / IND / [Sep] / 30 / 186[2],” was sufficient postage for delivery to the Royal Center Post Office, but, as evident from the “forwarded” notation along the lower edge and the change in the address, the mail was sent on to Star City. This required an additional three cents and the stamp for the second journey is in the lower right corner with a postmark, “ROYAL CENTER / IND / OCT / 2.” This envelope matches to letter 1991.0291.5.
