Confederate handstamp (due) "10" cancel on a cover from Newtown Stephensburgh, Virginia, with Newtown Stephensbg, Virginia, October 15, circular date stamp on a white envelope addressed to Churchville, Virginia. Cover is docketed "1862." The inscription in the upper left indicates that this envelope was sent by a Confederate soldier who was allowed the privilege of sending mail 'due'. The absence of a "Paid" marking indicates that the recipient owed ten cents upon delivery at the post office.
