Owney received this token while visiting Brooklyn, New York in early April 1894. The token is dated “Apr. 12 -94” on the back and the front indicates Owney’s visit was to the Station G Brooklyn post office. According to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle Almanac from 1891, Station G served a district from “the East River and Newtown Creek along creek to Meeker Avenue, to Richardson Street, to Union Avenue, to North 14th, to East River.” The Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper from April 9, 1894 recorded Owney’s arrival in the area. In the story with a playful headline, “Inspector Owney Here,” the paper refers to the dog as “a visitor of national reputation,” and recorded his visit to the main Brooklyn post office, where he was welcomed by Postmaster Andrew T. Sullivan.
