Owney received this tag during a trip to Jackson, Mississippi. The tag is inscribed on one side by postal clerk William Henry Gibbs Jr., and on the other side by E.H. Dunning, also of Jackson, Mississippi. While Gibbs’ name is listed in the official registrar of postal employees of that era, Dunning is not. His connection to the Post Office Department is unknown. A number of railway lines ran through Jackson at that time, including the Illinois Central; the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley; the New Orleans & North Eastern; and the Memphis & Charleston Railroads.
