Owney, American, c. 1888 - 1897 · 1897
Owney received this medal engraved in his honor from Chicago’s Mascoutah Kennel Club. The club, founded in 1888, had held its first show in April 1889. The medal face features the mythological three-headed dog Cerberus, who guarded the underworld. Such an image would be quite appropriate for Owney, who was famous as a guardian of mail bags. The back of the medal is engraved “Awarded to Owney the Globe Trotter, Chicago, 1897.”
