Hand engraved in negative; vignette of William McKinley with 1-cent frame. The woodcut, number 537, was used for postal card printing by method of letterpress, or in philatelic terms, typography or relief printing. The Engraving Division at the Bureau of Engraving & Printing designed the woodcut for electrotyping plates. See U. S. Scott UX21.
