United States 3-cent George Washington stamp (USA Scott 26) tied by "Petersburg Va. May 25 (1861)" postmark. The addressee is Mrs. William Rives, wife of William Cabell Rives, a member of the Provisional Confederate Congress. Rives had previously served in the United States Senate and House of Representatives. He had also served as Ambassador to France. This cover was probably sent by Representative Rives while on his way to Richmond.
