Although severely burned by the heat of the fire, Inspectors realized that the dial on the door of the safe was missing. They believed that this was more than just a case of arson-but a crime of robbery and possibly fraud as well. They suspected that the criminals stole the money orders and stamps contained in the safe and then burned the Post Office to throw off investigators.
