December 25, 1869, envelope from Rome, Papal States, to Milford, Pennsylvania, sent in the French mail to the US. The letter was paid the proper rate of 1-lira 15-centesimi (115 centesimi) with two copies of the 40 centesimi, a 20-centesimi, a 10-centesimi, and a 5-centisimi adhesive of the 1868 issue and marked with a boxed PD. It was sent to Paris (29 Dec), entering France at the exchange office of St. Michel. At Paris the letter was placed in a closed bag for New York and sent to the UK for the next steamer to the US. The letter was in the mail placed on board the Inman Line steamship "City of Paris" calling at Queenstown for mail on December 31, 1869, and arriving at New York on January 11, 1870. The letter was processed the next day at New York, January 12, and marked that it was fully paid.
