12c Washington bisect on transcontinental cover
1852
The cover originated in San Francisco and was sent to Philadelphia. The 6c cross country rate was paid with a bisected 12c stamp. The bisect was not accepted in Philadelphia and was treated as an unpaid letter for which the rate was 10c.
