Isaac Walters wrote to his sister-in-law Rachel about the 1864 general election: "All the Ind Soldiers that were at the hospital Sick Started home this Morning on 15 days Furlough. they will all get to vote for President I Suppose I wish it was my lot I think I could make good use of the time allotted me. I think I Shall try to get a Furlough this winter & come home. if I do will try to pay you a visit I would like to See old Mill Creek once more". The election was November 8th and this letter was dated Nov 4th, thus four-days travel time alloted from Virginia. See also letter 1991.0291.94 about Isaac's account of the furloughed soldiers' return to Indiana to vote.
