Beth Inez Spiegelberg Smith · c. 1945
V-Mail letter sheet was addressed by Yeoman Joseph Spiegelberg at FPO 610 (located in the South Pacific, c. 1945) and intended for his infant daughter Beth Inez. There is no censor stamp or signature in the space allotted. This pre-printed message in all black ink includes a graphic designed by A. J. Andersen of the 4th Navy Construction Battalion and features a sailor posed waist-deep in a hole he is digging with a pickaxe. The excavator in the background in the tropical setting with palm trees and a hut is evocative of the Seabees work in the South Pacific during World War II, which is made light of in the humorous caption: "I'm learnin' a trade!"
