Telegram to Otto Praeger, September 5, 1918

Captain Benjamin B. Lipsner wires Otto Praeger, second assistant postmaster general, by Postal Telegraph telegram that Max Miller, one of the two pilots flying the New York to Chicago pathfinder trip, departs Belmont Park, Long Island, New York, on September 5, 1918 at 7:08 a.m. Pilot Edward V. “Turk” Gardner is unable to leave Belmont Park on schedule due to a broken tail skid. [Gardner's plane had earlier experienced a leaking fuel pump.] Lipsner asks C. L. Conner, Praeger’s chief clerk, to provide him with a report on the situation’s “entire fiasco.”
