This envelope is from one of the Hincks brothers to his sister Lucile. The September 25, 1864, letter was marked 'Examined' at Hilton Head by Capt. Neville Soulé, GS Gen. and Staff, Adj. Gen. Dept. of Charleston, and then it was put aboard a U.S. naval ship bound for New York, whereupon it entered the U.S. mail. The 1861 3-cent stamp carried it to occupied New Orleans.
