Button with letter carrier figurative
1893-1970
This brass button features an imprint of a uniformed letter carrier mid-stride wearing a satchel and holding a letter in hand. Set on a lined background, the figure stands above the letters “P.O.D.” (Post Office Department). The button met regulations for city delivery letter carriers’ jackets between 1893 and 1970. Between 1944 and 1955 postal officials suspended the requirement for all brass buttons and allowed plastics and other substitutes in order to conserve metal as part of the World War II rationing and post war recovery efforts.
