Alexander Hamilton, American, 1757 - 1804 · c. 1879
As treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton introduced "sin taxes" on tea, coffee, beer, wine, and distilled spirits. When farmers in western Pennsylvania rebelled again the whisky tax in 1794, Hamilton rode to Pittsburgh at the head of an army to enforce the tax and disperse the rebels. It is somewhat fitting, then, that his profile appears on this 1870s tax stamp for snuff.
