According the USPS Historian's report, May 2002: " In 1963, a nylon mesh cap for summer wear was added." (https://about.usps.com/who-we-are/postal-history/letter-carrier-uniform-overview.pdf). Maroon trim ended with uniform regulations introduced on July 1, 1970 for postal reorganization and changes required by July 1, 1971.
