Black two-line handstamp of the US Consulate General in Shanghai, a private marking, used on an envelope sent to the US Consul in Nagasaki, Japan. Letter probably prepared in early 1867 and arrived at Nagasaki on January 19, 1867. This was six months before the opening of the US Consular Postal Service at Shanghai.
