Letter from Second Assistant Postmaster General (Contract Office, Washington, DC) to Mr. A. H. Markland, special agent to the Post Office Department, at Old Point Comfort, Virginia. The letter writer asks Markland to report on the "nature and extent of the duties performed by Mr. [J. D.] Sanborn, and if his services are necessary for the interest of the mail service." Sanborn, who conveyed mails from the post office in Point Comfort, Virginia, to steamers, had asked for an increase in pay. It is dated June 22, 1864, and written on the single sheet of letterhead stationery with printed illustration of the Post Office Department building.
