This business letter was damaged in a pneumatic tube mail accident in New York City in the afternoon of February 21, 1898. The dirt, tears, loss, folds, and black marks are likely the result of accident. Grease stained mail was reported in news accounts of the accident. Damaged mail delivered to receipients was accompanied by notices (2014.2027.1 for example) of the accidents issued by the Postmaster of New York.
