September 30, 1862
The cover [.1] was dated "Sept 30" by the postmaster at Star City, Indiana. It is addressed to David Walters at Camp Jo Reynolds, Indiana (He was there no early than August and there through September 1862.). The remnant [.2] predates when David was at the camp, but the letter could have been sent to the Walters family, likely David's wife Rachel, in Star City by IsaacWalters, whose handwritting is on the remnant and his regiment was in Virginia on the date of the letter, June 13, 1862. One possiblity is that Rachel, who often used blue ink, enclosed Isaac's letter in an envelope sent from Star CIty and noted “in haste.” However, this cover may not have carried the June 13, 1862, instead, the remnant of that letter may have been stored with the cover as this collection passed through the Walters' family ownership.
