ELIX SALUT

This blown and molded square–shaped bottle has a baked enamel white oval cartouche that is outlined with blue vines, red and yellow flowers, and a three-pointed crown. The cartouche is marked <i>ELIX SALUT</i>. The jar would have contained Elixir Salutis, or Elixir of Health. The elixir was composed of the plants senna, coriander, and jalap. The elixir was used as a carminative to relieve flatulence and as a cathartic to accelerate bowel movements.
