Drug Jar

This is a square–shaped drug jar with a wide mouth and rounded foot. The gray–white glaze is decorated with blue floral vines, three medallions, and a crown representing the house of Saxony. The date “1716” is at the lower portion of the jar. According to George Urdang author of <i>The Squibb Ancient Pharmacy Catalogue</i>, the intertwined triple “C” on the left stands for Christian, Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels, and the letters LCD on the right for Louise Christine his wife.
