This blown and molded square–shaped glass bottle is marked ESS VALERIAN in black text, with the first initial of each word in red. The jar would have contained Essence of Valerian—the oil of valerian root or valerian salt in an alcoholic solution. The solution was used as a tonic or weak sedative.
