During the Revolutionary period, American money often contained messages about unity that were intended to illustrate colonial solidarity against the British crown. The reverse of this Pennsylvania note from 1776 features an image of thirteen interlocking rings with the message “WE ARE ONE” in the middle. The names of the each of the colonies are printed on the rings and the words “AMERICAN CONGRESS” reflect the growing political unity of period.
