Kraft paper pulp sample, Roanoke Rapids, 1909

This is a sample of paper pulp that is sewn to cardboard backing. It was donated by George H. Marshall, the son of James F. Marshall and the nephew of George E. Marshall, both prominent early papermakers in the 19th century. This pulp sample is made of southern pine wood. According to information written by George H. on the back of the card, this sample was made on April 21, 1909 at the site of the first kraft wood pulp mill to be built in the United States located in Roanoke Rapids, North Caroline. George H. names himself in being “technical command” of this feat. This sample is said to be of the very first back to be made, or of the original “kraft cook.”
