The Lady of the Lake

Sir Walter Scott’s <i>The Lady of the Lake</i> was published by Richard Scott of New York in 1813. The six-canto poem tells the story of King James V’s struggle against James Douglas, and the affections of three suitors towards James Douglas’ daughter, Ellen. The narrative takes place over six days in the Trossachs region of Scotland, mainly Ellen’s Isle in Loch Katrine. Eventually it is revealed that one of the suitors is in fact James V, and James Douglas is pardoned due to the King’s affection for Ellen.
