Hyer, Tom · 1849
Colored print of two men (New York native Tom "Young America" Hyer and the Irish immigrant James "Yankee" Sullivan) fighting bare-fisted in a boxing ring. Warmly dressed spectators gather around the ring on a snow-covered river bank. The fighters and some spectators are identified in a key below the image on both sides of the title. The fight took place on Februrary 7, 1849 on Still Pond Heights, Kent County, Maryland. Tom Hyer was the victor after 16 rounds but supposedly only lasted 18 minutes.
