This simple apparatus shows that different metals conduct heat at different rates. Jan Ingenhousz, a Dutch man of science, described a similar device in his <i>Expériences et Observations sur Divers Objets de Physique</i> (Paris, 1785). He, in turn, was inspired by Benjamin Franklin who had wondered why silver teapots tended to have wooden handles.
