This instrument was purchased for the U.S. Military Academy in 1830. It consists of five small glass containers lined up on a brass stand. When each container is filled with a different liquid, one can see that they refract light in different ways. The “Lerebours à Paris” inscription refers to Noel Jean Lerebours, an instrument maker in Paris in the early nineteenth century.
