Details of parts of the ambulance are depicted beneath the main image with keyed descriptions. The print's title to Captain Hezekiah L. Thistle, who in January 1839 was in Florida commanding a group of volunteer soldiers in a removal or forced relocation of American Indians when he died. His residence was in Pennsylvania in 1837 when he petitioned the US government for a patent of a saddle he designed for wounded soldiers while stationed in Louisiana where he was also involved with a "removal' or forced relocation of native peoples.
