The <i>New American Pronouncing Speller</i> was authored by E. H. Butler & Company in 1872 as part of the <i>New American Series</i> of schoolbooks. The book provided an explanation of letter sounds and silent letters, followed by a test of words usually mispronounced or misspelled.
