Unloading the Lighters

Watercolor on paper. The work depicts men unloading cargo at the American Base Port in Marseille, France. Two lighters (barges used to transport supplies and passengers to and from moored ships) are pictured carrying large quantities of cargo, which are being transferred to a building at the right under the supervision of a uniformed soldier. There is a small row boat at the front of the painting in which sit three men wearing brightly-colored clothing and head gear. Signed at bottom right by the artist, "W.J. Aylward, A.E.F. '19"
