Demonstration Model, American Steam Capstan Windlass, 1883

This model represents a windlass, a rotating mechanical winch used on ships to lift or lower heavy objects, lines, cables or chains. The windlass was powered by a nearby steam engine on deck, which made it easier to service. The model was made and given to the Smithsonian in 1886 by the American Ship Windlass Company of Providence, RI for display at the London International Fisheries Exhibition. It demonstrates three of the corporation's patents in one model and was its finest "New Style" Providence steam capstan windlass.
