James G. Blaine was one of those figures in American politics, like Henry Clay, who achieved immense power and influence, but was never able to win the presidency. The towering Senator and Secretary of State was considered incredibly charismatic and brilliant, but drew nearly as much hatred from his rivals (within his own Republican party as well as the Democrats), as he won support from admirers. His 1884 run for the White House was derailed by accusations of corruption, which led many key voters to abandon the Republican party in favor of Grover Cleveland and the Democrats. Among his fans, however, Blaine was considered a hero.
