This photograph was inscribed by President George H.W. Bush on the occasion of General Powell being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991. Along with the Congressional Gold Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award of the United States. General Powell was awarded a second Presidential Medal of Freedom, with distinction, in 1993. This photograph hung in the sitting room of the Powell family's residence in McLean, Virginia.
