This is a World War II War Department Basic Field Manual Soldier’s Handbook (a) and note sheet (b) belonging to Robert S. Jennings. The Field Manual (a) is a small book with a brown paper cover. The upper half of the front cover has a double black outline of a rectangle. Within the rectangle is text that reads “WAR DEPARTMENT / BASIC FIELD MANUAL / SOLDIER’S HANDBOOK / JULY 23, 1941.” The back cover is blank. Tucked within the pages of the manual was a sheet of handwritten notes on army stationary (b). At the top center margin of the sheet is blue pre-printed text that reads “COMPANY C. 1ST TRAINING BATTALION / FIRST REGIMENT, BIRTC / FORT McCLELLAN, ALABAMA.” On either side of the text is a graphic of two crossed rifles. Under this text is a quarter page of pencil handwritten notes. The back of the sheet is full of pencil handwritten notes on aspects of the manual.
