Model 1854 Lorenz rifle

An Austrian Model 1854 .54 caliber Lorenz rifle constructed of primarily of a beech stock; steel barrel, breech ramrod; and brass butt plate and other fittings. The oxidized barrel features a front sight, stored ramrod, barrel bands, and shorted front stock. The proper left lock plate is missing. There are various markings throughout; the largest engraving was added post-manufacture and constitutes the entire proper right stock: [CAPTURED AT PORT HUDSON LA. / JUNE 13, 1863 / PRESENTED TO HON. ELIAS ROOT / BY THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF / 110 N.Y.V. Co I]. The proper right lock plate, parallel to the hammer, shows an engraving “860”. A “26” is painted in a square on the proper left of the stock. There is a long split in the stock’s wood from the butt, and areas of wood replacement closest to the butt, where an oxidized plate features the engraving of “C S” below a stock screw. An off-white auction tag identifying the rifle and lot number, is tied by string to the trigger guard.
