Charleston slave badge from 1813 for Porter No. 86
John Joseph Lafar, American, 1784 - 1849 · 1813
This is an octagonal metal slave badge. On the recto is text that reads ”CHARLESTON [stamped]” across the top. Under that is “1813 [stamped] / PORTER [stamped] / No. [stamped] 86 [engraved] .” On the verso is a stamped cartouche at the center with the maker's name “LAFAR.” There is a hole punched at the center top.
